“The bullet missed all the major arteries and organs,” the doc says. “You’re a lucky man. Besides the blood loss and the pain you’ll be experiencing for the next couple of weeks, you’ll have a full recovery.”

I don’t feel so lucky. I feel nauseous and tired as fuck.

“You sure?” Emiliano asks. “Aris doesn’t look so good.”

“The adrenaline rush is gone. The pain is setting in, and he’s lost a lot of blood. I can keep him overnight, but what he needs is a good night’s sleep. I can drop by his place in the morning,” Doc replies.

“Right.” Nero makes the decision. “Emiliano will drop Aris back at the hotel. I’ll have a man pick up the doc and bring him over to make sure Aris is on the mend. In the meantime, I want two men guarding the hotel room.”

“I’ll make the arrangements,” Luciano says, then he leaves the room to do just that. I pull myself up and give myself a second before climbing off the examination table. I’ve got to pull myself together. I can’t show Nero that I’m hurting, and I’ve got to get home to Nina.

“Let’s get moving. Nina’s probably freaking out by now,” I say. It’s nearing midnight. My father left Nina at the hotel hours ago. I thought of calling, but decided against it. If I told her I’d been shot, she’d only worry. This way when she sees I’m fine, it won’t be so bad.

A car comes to pick up Emiliano and me, while Nero and Luciano head home. Emiliano insists on walking me all the way to the door, and I tease him about wanting a good-night kiss. That’s what I like about Emiliano; he still kids around and knows how to have a good time. Most men being groomed to take over the position of an underboss either become entitled or cold, and sometimes both.

We encounter two of our men, who are going to be our protectors for the night. I respect these two guys very much. They, much like Evangeline and me, have been tainted by events that we had no control over. Armando and Joseph are two brothers who have had to work harder than any other soldiers because their brother Donato was working with the Russians on a sex trafficking ring.

Donato and his Russian comrades intended to take the young women of La Famiglia and sell them. They even succeeded in getting to Olivia, but with the help of Nostra Casa and a man they call Ghost, we got her back before the trade could be made.

Unfortunately, the sins committed by the brother have resulted in lives of penance for Joseph and Armando. They rose to every occasion, and since I know better than anyone how hard it is to rise above the gossip and labels, we’ve connected, and our friendship is strong. Joseph comes to greet me first with a light pat on the back and a concerned expression on his face.

“How’re you doing, man?” he asks.

“I’ve been better.
